Phillip J. Roux, 81 years of age, of Panhandle, Texas, won his courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at his home. Phillip made his grand entrance into this world on April 4, 1942, in Sharon, Connecticut to Charles and Mary Margaret Roux.
He enlisted into the United States Navy on December 1, 1959, and proudly served his country for eight years as an aircraft mechanic until his honorable discharge on December 20, 1965. It was during his service that he met and fell in love with Paula Crisp. They married on March 23, 1962, in Sandia, Texas and experienced life together for 61 years!
Phillip appreciated a wide variety of pastimes throughout his lifespan. He used to really enjoy hunting and fishing and just simply “hanging out” with his buddies. His appreciation for aircraft intrigued him enough that he assembled various model airplanes (the larger ones with a motor) and savored the instant gratification once it lifted off the ground and he was flying it! Of course, he watched and cheered on his favorite football teams, and he could both cook and barbeque like a champ. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed strumming the chords on a guitar – he was even in a band while in the Navy.
Although he was as ornery as the day is long, he was also the gentlest giant teddy bear with an amazing hug you could have ever known. It was his sheer stubbornness, strength and will power with a little bit of his sense of humor thrown in for good measure that helped him battle cancer head on. He never gave up and his only worries were of his precious wife and family being okay after he left them. Rest easy sailor!
His arrival into heaven was anxiously anticipated by his parents; a son, Gary Roux; sister, Joan and two brothers, Raymond and Jimmy.
His ornery yet loving personality will be remembered and cherished by his wife of 61 years, Paula Roux of Panhandle; two sons, Stephen Roux of Colorado, Stacy Roux and wife Erin of Washington; three daughters, Susan Barron and husband Steven of Magnolia, Julie Roux, Wendy Chase both of Washington; two brothers, Ronny Roux and wife Donna of Connecticut, Kenny Roux and wife Helen of New York; a sister, Shirley Coons of Florida; ten grandchildren, Laura, Christie, Andrew, Chris, Daniel, Ariel, Dylan, Joshua, Hanna and Katie; great-grandchildren, Emily, Juliette, Isaiah, Olivia, Carter, Maxwell, Charlotte, Sirius, Abby, Zahnder, Rayden, Erica, and Kennedy as well as extended family members and his two very best friends, Bob Cockrell and Jim Priddy.
The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 3:00 pm, Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Unity Baptist Church, 726 W. 10th Street, Borger, TX with Pastor Bruce Ridling officiating. The family has entrusted the cremation care of their loved one to Winegeart Funeral Home.
If donations are preferred, the family suggests they be made to the American Cancer Society, 1300 Summit Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76102 in honor of Phillip.
