Obituary for John Webster Thomas

John Webster Thomas, 69 years old, of Groom, Texas, passed from this life at his home on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. He was born on March 22, 1953, in Unionville, Missouri to John and Viola Thomas.

As a youngster growing up, John’s family moved frequently, but 41 years ago he moved his family from Happy Camp, California to Groom and that remained his home. He married his soulmate and true love, Lavern Archer, on May 13, 1978, in West Covina, California.

John was a relatively quiet man, until he started telling a whopper of a tale – he could spin up an amazing story that usually turned out quite comical. He deeply cherished his family and looked forward to watching his kids and eventually grandkids with all types of extracurricular activities. He was particularly fond of going on boat rides and watching the kids tubing, but don’t think for a minute he would get in the water! When not involved with family excursions, he could be found watching his beloved Gunsmoke and the Andy Griffith Show. Intrigued by old cars and hot rods, he also enjoyed watching Street Outlaws, attending car shows and listening to the soothing rhythm of classic rock radio while cruisin’ the back roads to melt away the stress of the world. Another of his favorite stress relievers was mowing his yard. He kept a meticulous lawn to which he was extremely proud of.

John had been a truck driver as well as a grain truck driver for most of his life and could drive any type of tractor, old or new, without breaking a sweat. As the story goes, he could back a rig from here to Oklahoma City without ever jackknifing!

Preceded in death, John was greeted by his parents, John Sam Thomas and Viola Lee Thomas and a sister, Mari Ann Hobbs.

John has left to carry on his memories, his wife of 44 years, Lavern Thomas of the home; three children, Sam Thomas and wife Diana of Amarillo, Johnny Ray Thomas and wife Kelly of Unionville, MO, Maggie Sellers and husband James of Pampa; two sisters, Paula Soria and husband David of Las Vegas, NV, Peggy Sue Hamilton and husband John of Unionville, MO; four grandchildren, Phoenix Logston and husband Devyn of Kirksville, MO, Mason Zamudio of Pampa, Hudson Zamudio of Pampa, Collin Thomas of Amarillo; one great-granddaughter, Mila Tidwell and numerous extended family members.

In keeping with John’s wishes, the family will hold a private memorial celebration in honor of him. They have entrusted the cremation care of their loved one to Winegeart Funeral Home.
