Obituary for Charles Melvin Phillis

Charles Melvin Phillis, 88 years of age, of White Deer, Texas left his earthly home to be in the presence of his Lord on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the VA Hospital in Amarillo. He was born on August 19, 1934 to John and Fairy Phillis in Whitewater, Kansas.

Shortly after graduating from Garden City High School in 1954, Charles enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War for two years. Five years later, on August 13, 1961, Charles married his soulmate, Edith Hefner. Over the years, he has been employed as an operator and mechanic for Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas, Kerr-McGee Natural Gas for two years, as an operator and supervisor for Haliburton Resource Management until his retirement and then following his retirement, he decided to dive back in and worked for Specialty Compressor.

Charles had such a sweet demeanor about him and was always very welcoming and hospitable, that no matter where life took he and Edith, he was bound to fit in. He was an Eagles Lodge Member, served on the Briscoe School Board, was a Cub Scout Leader and a member of the United Methodist Church of White Deer. Always on the go, Charles managed his rental properties, enjoyed fishing, spent as much time as he could with his grandkids and traveled with Edith; however, his servants spirit led him to be the most content when he was able to help others. He loved his White Deer community and helping when needed.

Anxiously awaiting his homegoing were his parents; a son, Michael Charles Phillis; grandparents, Albert and Alice Bink and Mr. and Mrs. Phillis.

He is survived by his wife, Edith Phillis of White Deer; a daughter, Stacey Haiduk of Amarillo; brother, Clarence Phillis of Seminole, OK; sister, Alberta Helmle and husband Carl of Johnson, KS; sister-in-law, Vi Monical of Garden City, KS; four grandchildren, Jacey Haiduk of Lubbock, Chloe Haiduk of Amarillo, Tabithia Ott and husband John of Mannford, OK, Seth Phillis and wife Brittany of Mesquite, TX and six great-grandchildren.

If donations are a preference, the family suggests they be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association of the Panhandle, PO Box 52405, Amarillo, TX 79159 or American Heart Association, 12345 N Lamar Blvd, Suite 200, Austin, TX 78753 in memory of Charles.

Charles will be available to pay final respects from 3 to 8pm, Monday, February 20th and again from 9am to 8pm, Tuesday, the 21st at Winegeart Funeral Home, 303 N Frost Street.
